Term contractionary policy Definition: A stabilization policy consisting of a decrease in government spending and/or an increase in taxes (fiscal policy) and/or a decrease in the amount of money in circulation (monetary policy). This policy is designed to avoid or correct the problems associated with a business-cycle expansion.
